Loft Decking

I have decked out quite a few lofts now due to an increasing need for storage in households. It is certainly worthwhile if your loft can accommodate for this. I always like to check the insulation is up to current standards and top up if necessary. If the space allows I use the best practice method of keeping the load bearing timbers raised up high and fixed to the truss node points. This not only allows more room for insulation, but also means that any weight or movement in the loft won’t cause any cracks or damage to the plastered ceilings below.

By installing decking around the opening, the the itchy insulation no longer comes into contact on entry and exit.

If there are no trusses or the span is too great to raise the supporting timbers, then alternative approaches can be implemented. Counter fixing the support timbers in perpendicular directions will spread the load evenly over the ceiling below whilst still providing more room for insulation.

Reducing risk of falling through openings is always advised.
